Editor’s note: After narrowing his choices to Jalen Rose and Brian Urlacher (eventually choosing Rose), Steve Rosenbloom asked you to name your worst “best” player and you answered en masse. And you didn’t stop there. You named the worst “best” of almost everything, including newspaper columnist. Sorry, the Bulls are not including Rosenbloom with Jalen Rose in any trade talks.
You know the worst “best” Cub, White Sox (Sock?), Bear, Bull and, oh yeah, Blackhawk. You know Chicago’s worst “best” referee (ChicagoSports.com’s Jerry Markbreit), college player (DePaul’s Andre Brown) and Red paper (RedEye, thanks very much).
You know Chicago’s worst “best” exes, too, including ex-general manager (Jerry Krause), ex-player (Todd Hundley) and ex-offensive coordinator (John Shoop). Oops, may have jumped the gun on that last one.
You even know Chicago’s worst “best” player to have never played for a Chicago team: Deion Sanders.
But you knew all that.
Bet you didn’t know that Bears’ linebacker Urlacher had almost as many letters championing him (eight) as the best “best” as those condemning him as Chicago’s worst “best” (nine).
Or that Cubs’ slugger Sammy Sosa had the same number (five) on both sides. Wish he was that consistent during the season.
Enough. This is about your worst “best.” So here are the best letters damning the Chicago’s worst “best” whatever.
Chicago’s worst “best” . . .

CAPITAL idea
I WANT RON ARTEST BACK!!!!! Jalen Rose just isn’t cutting it.
–Dan Kolen
Leveling a blow
I’d have to agree that Rose is a huge liability for this team. After shooting 3 for 11 or something (actually, 3-14) against the Lakers and missing a key free throw against Minnesota, and then turning it over again on the last play (how many times has he done this?), it’s clear that Rose can’t stop even a mid-level shooting guard and certainly can’t score against the top-level shooting guards in the league.
I was a huge supporter of the trade a few years ago, but now I am regretting it and wish we hadn’t let Ron Artest go.
–Ralph Kinscheck
Don’t make it a habit
Wow, Steve this is the first time I’ve ever agreed with anything you’ve ever said. But, you are right: Rose is bad. He takes shot after shot and it’s retarding the growth and progression of the younger players.
–Pat Collier
It’s not the SATs, pal
This is the easiest question you’ve ever asked: Jalen Rose. Trading for him and giving up Artest and [Brad] Miller was one of [Jerry] Krause’s worst [moves].
–Glenn Koser
Take me to your leader
No doubt about it, it’s Rose. He’s a good guy, and his phat contract isn’t his fault. His horrible shooting isn’t even the issue. It’s his poor leadership, and equally important, his lack of energy. At least Sammy Sosa, and Brian Urlacher are always hustling.

Face in the crowd
Without a doubt the worst “best” player in Chi-town is Urlacher. He has been sub-standard the last two years but for some reason people think he is the next Messiah. I think the first two years of his career he was good, he made tackles and interceptions, but now he is just another NFL linebacker.
–Mike Stevens
Hollywood walk of shame
Urlacher! What happened to this guy? Has he gone Hollywood? If he doesn’t go back to being the man he was then he deserves to lose his spot. The Bears have a tradition of hard-nosed middle linebackers that can pop your mouthpiece out.
–Karl Benjamin
I’d go wedge here, Ray
Everyone was so quick to make Urlacher “King of the Linebackers” because he was the best thing in a brutally inept organization. Urlacher would be lucky if Ray Lewis would allow him to be his caddie. That the two are even compared is disgusting.
–Nate Johns
Excluded company
Urlacher by a mile simply because neither Rose or Zhamnov would ever be considered impact players in their respective sports.
–George Juretic
Wide out shout out
Aren’t we forgetting Mr. Reliable, Dez White? I mean, he is the Bear’s coaching staff’s “best” player.

How bad is he?
Zhamnov is so bad he shouldn’t even be listed. Rehab, injuries, rehab, blah, blah, blah.

What’s to like?
It’s a no-brainer. I am a die-hard Cubs fan, but Sammy Sosa is the most overrated player in the history of baseball. Defensively, he is still horrible, which is sad because he has actually improved. Offensively, he still swings for the fences at every at bat. He says he wants to be a team player, but he is so far from that.
–Joe Sanders
Stick a cork in him
Without a doubt it’s Sammy (Boombox, Corky) Sosa. He seems to think the Cubs are all about him.

Here’s to you, Mr. Rosenbloom
It’s amazing how a guy who’s been switched to a position he never played before the NFL and has a horrid coaching staff showing him the ropes takes as much abuse as Brian Urlacher.
Of course, not as amazing as Steve Rosenbloom unseating Art Garfunkel as the last Caucasian with an afro.
–Chris Carson
Give or take a tenth
Man, Rosenbloom, you suck and you always have. Your time as a columnist can’t be long. You have never been funny, well, maybe 0.1 percent of the many times you’ve tried. Please either quit or move.
