Marcus Theatre, 16350 La Grange Rd., plans to add three movie screens to the south side of the building and a four-story parking structure that will provide 406 spaces.
The new screens will add 537 seats, resulting in a total of 3,373 seats spread among 17 screens, village planner David Howat said.
As a condition of the approval granted on a 5-2 vote Monday, Marcus Theatre agreed to add two left-turn lanes to eastbound 163rd Street at La Grange Road and to restripe 165th Street and provide curbside improvements for both roads.
Road improvements are scheduled for next spring, followed by construction of the parking structure beginning next summer and the new screens opening in early 2005, said Marcus attorney David Sosin of Sosin, Lawler and Arnold in Palos Park.
Trustees Bernie Murphy and Ed Schussler voted against the plan, saying the expansion would only add to the congestion along La Grange Road.
“This is way too much of a use in this particular area. The roads are already tied up, and this will contribute greatly to congestion,” Murphy said.
Murphy said he believed the village fulfilled its obligation to Marcus with the original development and that the expansion is not in the best interest of the village or the people of Orland Park. “This is too much in too small an area,” he said.
