Cable network Trio will cast a critical eye on Hollywood’s awards-show industry with a pair of documentaries scheduled for December.

The two documentaries–“The Award Show Awards Show” and “The Golden Globes: Hollywood’s Dirty Little Secret”–will go beyond the red carpets and acceptance speeches to examine how self-congratulation became such a big deal in Tinseltown. They’re part of the channel’s monthlong “Awards Mania” programming.

“Our Golden Globes documentary [8 p.m. Dec. 14] is designed to give viewers some insight into this powerful, highly sought-after, yet somewhat mystifying Hollywood accolade,” says Lauren Zalaznick, Trio’s president.

“The Award Show Awards Show,” scheduled for Dec. 7, will take a more general look at the awards business, from nomination campaigns to red-carpet glitz. The show will also hand out its own “awards” for categories such as “most annoying acceptance speech” and “most meaningless awards show.”
