Top-seeded Taft improved to 8-1 as Mike Fritzler carried 15 times for 100 yards and a TD before leaving with an ankle injury. Chad Nishibayashi stepped in and carried 20 times for 94 yards and the Eagles’ final two scores. Sr. DT Jeff Castle led the Taft defense with four sacks.

Robert Dean carried 15 times for 111 yards and Termaine Aikens threw for one TD and ran for another as 2nd-seeded Hyde Park (7-2) built a 23-0 lead. Quentin Cooper rushed for 158 yards and a TD for Englewood (6-3).

Tim Banks piled up 216 yards and a TD on 23 carries as 5th-seeded Hope (8-1) won its first-ever playoff game. Banks scored on a 51-yard run in the first quarter, and Bryant Larkin’s 7-yard TD run with 1:08 left in the first half gave Hope as 12-8 lead.

Sean O’Connor’s second HR of the game — a two-out solo shot in the bottom of the 8th — lifted Payton (13-1). O’Connor went 3-for-5 with three RBIs as Payton rallied from a 9-1 fourth-inning deficit. .
