It’s time to rethink our breakfast habits, according to the American Institute of Cancer Research. Too many of us are filling up on sweet pastries or cereals, or opting for cholesterol-laden foods such as eggs and sausage. Even worse, 17 percent of adults eat no breakfast at all.
Scientists at the institute have issued a new breakfast guidebook calling for more fruit and whole-grain cereals to get a healthful start on our day.
Nutritious breakfast ideas include fruit smoothies made with low-fat yogurt, whole-wheat toast with a dab of peanut butter and banana slices, and instant oatmeal or whole-grain cereal sweetened with fresh fruit and served with low-fat milk.
