Regret Over the Wires
With his sleepy voice and college-rock sound, Matthew Ryan risks inclusion in the cadre of sensitive young male singer- songwriters led by John Mayer. But Ryan’s fourth album reveals a depth far beyond most of his would-be peers. “Regret Over the Wires” is a quietly passionate collection of 12 songs that contrast the distance between past, present and hoped-for future. When combined with Ryan’s subtle guitar-centered musical arrangements, the result is a sort of simmering desperation for something real to hold on to or believe in. Take away: Redemption realized.
