Though adolescent boys are known for taking ill-advised risks, tempting fate in other ways seems to be fairly even between the genders. Gambling for money remains a decidedly male behavior among youths 14 through 18 (54 percent for boys to 16 percent for girls), but girls won’t be outdone with other risks, according to the Institute for Adolescent Risk Communication at the University of Pennsylvania.

Though more boys have smoked marijuana (29 percent to 19 percent), more girls have smoked cigarettes (38 to 33) and drunk alcohol (66 to 64).
Asked what they think the popular kids would be more likely to do, more girls than boys said drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes and smoke marijuana.
