The Derek Trucks Band

Soul Serenade

Derek Truck’s fourth album with his fine band is evidence of his eclecticism: Opening track “Soul Serenade” moves effortlessly and effectively from the Memphis underground to a “Bitches Brew” cauldron of jazz fusion. Like the best assimilators, Trucks engages in musical conversations with those who inspire and guide him, making his point with personal, highly musical responses.

Take away: Jam fusion

Also out this week: John Mayer, “Heavier Things”
