Electric Six

Fire (XL)

Years from now, this tongue-in-cheek Detroit sextet will be remembered solely for its smash single “Danger! High Voltage,” featuring the irresistibly madcap “Fire in the disco/Fire in the Taco Bell” refrain and a cameo by The White Stripes’ Jack White. It’s by far the best moment on “Fire,” a campy send-up album of disco, heavy metal, new wave and arena-rock cliches. The group’s adolescent braggadocio, embellished falsettos and over-the-top sound pay winking homage to Van Halen, Dio and The Village People, but a little goes a very long way. When the record concludes, one feels as if they’ve unnecessarily re-experienced Kiss’ 1979 disco-rock hit “I Was Made for Loving You,” presumably the inspiration behind Electric Six songs such as “Dancefloor Commander” and “Electric Demons in Love.”
