Chicago police overreacted against anti-war demonstrators during a March 20 protest downtown, using force when it wasn’t necessary, denying medical attention and refusing to let people disperse, according to witnesses who spoke Tuesday at City Hall.

Police officials did not appear at the hearing on the advice of Corporation Counsel Mara Georges, who cited a pending civil suit against the city stemming from the police action, said Ald. Joe Moore (49th). Police spokesman David Bayless said officers did a good job despite difficult circumstances.
