Illinois State officials said Tuesday they could learn as early as next week whether Eli Quick–the boy who earlier this spring was suspected of being a missing North Carolina child–is related to a Downstate woman who wants custody of him.
Positive DNA test results would end the mystery over the true identity of Eli, believed to be about 7 years old, who is currently living with a foster family in Chicago.
Tests of Cheri Trandel and her mother were taken June 2, and results typically take 14 days, a social worker told Judge Sandra Otaka during a hearing Tuesday in Cook County Juvenile Court.
Trandel, who lives in the southern Illinois town of Anna, believes Eli is actually Timothy Trandel, a boy her sister gave birth to about seven years ago.
