The Chicago Park District will take its first steps toward fulfilling Mayor Richard M. Daley’s hope of turning Meigs Field into Northerly Island Park with a June 21 fishing tournament.
Legal challenges to Daley’s midnight demolition in late March of the Meigs runway on Northerly Island have all but run their course, with a federal suit withdrawn recently by a national aviation group and a temporary restraining order by a Cook County judge lifted. That’s cleared the way for the district to start using the peninsula as a park.
