Faced with a growing budget deficit for next year, the Palatine Village Council approved an ambulance user fee that is expected to generate more than $900,000 per year.
Residents and non-residents will be billed for ambulance service beginning July 1. Residents will be charged $250 for basic life support services and $350 for advanced life support. Non-residents will be billed $350 for basic and $450 for advanced life support services. Patients also will be charged $5.47 per mile for transport to a hospital.
A property-tax levy for fire services previously covered the cost.
Ambulance user fees are generally covered through most private insurance plans and by Medicaid and Medicare, officials said.
