Chicago aldermen would have veto power over building permits for some developments in their wards under a measure proposed Monday that would greatly increase their authority.

“What we are saying is that even if you have the right zoning, you cannot go in and [build] without letting anybody know,” said Ald. Billy Ocasio (26th), who plans to introduce the ordinance at a Wednesday City Council meeting. “There needs to be a letter of sign-off.”

Ocasio cited several projects in his ward that, despite being in compliance with the city’s zoning ordinance, have changed the character of the streets where they have been built.
