The morning a Lincolnshire couple was bludgeoned with a hammer in their bedroom, everything seemed routine in the home of a high school student charged in the attack, the boy’s father said Wednesday.

Jonathan McMeekin, a Mundelein High School sophomore, “came in and took a shower and everything, and got dressed and went to school,” said his father, Michael.

According to police, hours earlier that Monday, the 17-year-old had broken into the home of Rick Rogers, 49, and Angela Gloria, 36, and beat them with a hammer. Police say he has admitted to the attack and said he did it because Rogers would not let him date his 14-year-old daughter.

The elder McMeekin, 47, an unemployed former technical representative at the shuttered Outboard Marine Corp. in Waukegan, said his son’s arrest came as a shock to the family.

As police continued Wednesday to investigate the case, Michael McMeekin said nothing seemed amiss before his son’s arrest.
