In the wake of Tuesday’s spectator attack on an umpire at the White Sox-Kansas City Royals game, state Rep. John Fritchey (D-Chicago) said Thursday he is working on a bill that would raise penalties for trespassing at sports or other public events.
The measure would turn the offense from a misdemeanor into a Class 4 felony, punishable by up to three years in prison and a fine ranging from $1,000 to $25,000.
“Even though it was an umpire who got attacked, the entire city of Chicago got a black eye,” Fritchey said. “We need to send a message to fans, as well as the entire country, that these types of stupid actions will not be tolerated.”
