Coaches constantly bemoan the difficulty of winning on the road, and the Big Ten provides the proof for their contention.
None of its teams has more than two conference wins on the road and only Northwestern (2-5) and Penn State (0-5) have losing records at home.
In the Atlantic Coast Conference, No. 13 Maryland, at 3-2, is the only team with a winning road conference record. Of its other top teams, No. 8 Duke is 2-4, No. 10 Wake Forest is 2-3 and North Carolina State is 1-4.
In the Big East, No. 9 Pittsburgh is 3-3 in road conference games. No. 12 Notre Dame has the same record.
In the Southeastern Conference, No. 2 Kentucky is a perfect 5-0 away from home, but No. 7 Florida is only 3-2 and No. 19 Mississippi State is an abysmal 1-3.
In the top-heavy Big 12, No. 3 Texas (3-2), No. 5 Oklahoma (4-2), No. 6 Kansas (4-1) and No. 16 Oklahoma State (4-1) are a combined 15-6 in road conference games; the league’s other eight teams are 4-36.
Then there’s the Pac-10. No. 1 Arizona is 6-0 in road conference games, and winning there as well are California (4-1), Stanford (4-3) and Arizona State (4-3).
How to explain? Well, Washington State is 0-6 at its Friel Court and, remarkably enough, UCLA is 0-5 at its Pauley Pavilion.
Of the 68 teams in those six conferences, Washington State, UCLA and Penn State are the only ones who have yet to win a conference game at home.
