Q. To get rid of squeaky wood floors, should I use powdered graphite or talcum powder in the cracks of the boards?
Jim Wheelock, Charleston
A. Experts recommend either one. Both are messy, but some think the black graphite is messier because of its dark color. You’ll need to rub the powder into the spaces between the wood planks and then step over the area to work the powder down into the subfloor. Several applications will be needed. The powder is slippery, so it’s important to clean the floor as soon as possible. This is not a guaranteed solution; if the subflooring and joists are loose, the squeaks may not go away until this is corrected underneath.
Q. The exterior of my 30-year-old house is synthetic stucco. It seems to be absorbing water in many locations and I think I have mold in the wall. What can I do to correct this problem?
Wayne Abbott, Northbrook
A. Most of the problems with stucco and similar materials are due to water seepage around doors, windows and other joints or borders where caulk, flashing and other sealants are faulty or worn out. Experts recommend that all seals be regularly inspected. And they say that a backer rod should be inserted in the gap between a door and the edge of stucco siding. This rod is designed to expand and contract with changing temperatures for a more durable seal. A metal drip cap along the top edge of windows and doors could also help prevent water from getting inside. And all wood trim should be sealed and painted to maintain their water-repellent nature. In recent years, consumers have been complaining about water problems related to synthetic stucco or EFIS (exterior finish and insulation system) products used on their homes. Homeowners have brought class action lawsuits against some manufacturers of EFIS.
