Veteran ABC News reporter Sam Donaldson said Wednesday his network has cleared him to speak to MSNBC about a position with the cable news outlet.

“I didn’t have the ability to negotiate with anyone else without permission from ABC. They have now given that to me,” Donaldson said on Spike O’Dell’s WGN-AM morning show, adding he doesn’t know what MSNBC would have him do.

Donaldson, at the center of rumors of an overhaul of MSNBC’s prime time schedule, has seen his profile at ABC diminish since he and Cokie Roberts were dropped from the Sunday morning news affairs program “This Week” last September in favor of George Stephanopoulos.

Donaldson, who has a show on ABC’s radio network, noted how the pugnacious bantering on some cable news networks isn’t his cup of tea: “What I don’t do is … unfortunately, I guess, from the standpoint of success today, a lot of the stuff that the cable networks do do. So doo-doo may be the result of this.”
