Cabdrivers and I are totally bonding, as you might know by now. First, a few weeks ago, I wrote a little item about how the public should be nice to the put-upon and misunderstood cabby. Shortly after that, I left my wallet in a cab, and the cabby returned it. So I wrote another nice item.

I think I’m staying a step ahead with the good karma, because last week, when I left my wallet in yet another cab, that cabby returned it too. I have since bought a purse that won’t fly open. I also have another cabby story:

When I asked a cabby to name the oddest thing left behind in his cab, he shrugged and said, “All anyone has ever left are cell phones and umbrellas. Lots of phones and umbrellas.

“But,” he added, without missing a beat, “a friend of mine had a baby left in his cab.”

Seems the friend was parked at the airport when a couple having a heated discussion slid into the back seat. They quarreled the entire ride, then got out, still quarreling as the cabby pulled away. The cabdriver didn’t realize they had placed a baby in the back seat until miles later when police pulled up behind him, sirens blaring. The couple had stopped fighting long enough to realize what they’d done and call 911.

Funny thing–now I don’t feel nearly as foolish about a wallet or two left behind.
