The moving van had just pulled up, I swear. And before the first load of boxes had been hoisted off the back, the doorbell rang.

It was the across-the-street neighbors and they were bearing gifts. A big roomy basket, packed to the gills with essentials for the unpacking family. Here is what they packed: bright juicy oranges, chilled bottles of water, lollipops and sour balls for the kiddies (or so they thought), cheese and crackers for the grownups (and hungry kiddies too).

Best of all, they tucked in a stash of carry-out menus from all the best places in these new uncharted parts. And, promised the kindly new neighbors, they’d be more than happy to give us the thumbs up or down on all those menus that now are stored safely high on a shelf for any culinary emergencies–like that first night’s dinner.

Seems the neighbors just plain donated their stash to our brand-new-to-town plight. “If we were more organized, we would’ve gone around and collected new menus,” laughed Allyson Haut, the good Samaritan in question. “We figured we knew all the restaurants, so we just gave you ours, complete with greasy fingerprints.”

One last thing: They tucked in a slip of paper with their names and phone number and told us to call if there was anything we needed. What more could we possibly need?
