“The Eel” will be shown as part of the Global Flicks 2003 series at the College of Du Page. In this 1998 Japanese film, directed by Shohei Imamura, a man in contemporary Japan kills his wife when he discovers that she is having an affair. Sentenced to prison for the crime, he is released after an 8-year sentence with his pet eel, which he has raised behind bars, and attempts to renew his life. The film, which was awarded the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, will be followed by a discussion.
