T.A.T.U.
200 Km/H in the Wrong Lane
You can almost hear the boardroom pitch on this one: “Three words, fellas: teenage Russian lesbians.”
Certainly, music is the least interesting part of the T.A.T.U. story. With their quasi-erotic image and accessible pop pull, Lena Katina and Julia Volkova have had four hit singles in their native country and are the first Eastern European group to sell more than a million albums in Europe. And now they’re starting to make noise in the United States as the single “All the Things She Said” moves up the charts.
But the album is a woeful mix of cheesy rock, dance and pop grooves and poor singing.
The nadir is their evisceration of the Smiths’ ’80s classic “How Soon Is Now?” The bigger question is how soon will it be over?
