Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Having just left Union Station on the Madison Street side, I crossed the street, planted the toe of my right foot precisely in the middle of the side of the curb and fell cleanly to the ground. Immediately two women stopped to help, and though I wanted to say, “Move along! Move along! There’s nothing to see here,” I just said, “I’m fine. Thanks.”

I am a downhill skier, an in-line skater. I run for exercise, walk great distances for fun. Yet three times in two years I have taken this embarrassing type of public tumble for no other reason than klutziness, despite numerous potential obstacles such as wet metal grates and sidewalk marble.

In that same time in the Loop area, I have seen only one elderly woman fall and one kid trip. Let’s go, people, I want to see more people falling so I don’t feel like the only goof.
