Des Plaines aldermen have given their support to a 4.75 percent increase in the city’s 2002 tax levy.

The move was approved on first reading this week earlier this month, but the measure — which passed after Mayor Tony Arredia broke a 4-4 vote — still must survive a final vote Monday.
If the levy request stands, a typical homeowner would pay $14 to $24 more in property taxes to the city, said Des Plaines Finance Director Jim Egeberg.
During a contentious late-night meeting earlier this month, aldermen voted to double the city’s current 1 cent-per-gallon gasoline tax, a move that should bring in an extra $600,000 a year.
Aldermen also voted against increasing the current 1 percent telecommunications fee, Egeberg said.
Local business leaders had organized in opposition to that proposal.
Aldermen also asked city officials to make up to $800,000 in cuts to the town’s proposed $40.3 million budget before the Monday meeting, he said.
