Cash obtained by authorities when local drug dealers had illegal assets confiscated over the last year was returned to the community on Tuesday when DuPage County State’s Atty. Joseph Birkett awarded 24 grants to fund drug-prevention programs.

Birkett awarded $9,945 in grants to 24 area organizations, with the maximum award being $500.

State law permits the use of drug dealers’ money to educate children about the dangers of substance abuse.

Since 1990, when the DuPage program began, nearly $90,000 and 270 grants have been awarded.
