New technology will allow town officials to notify up to 500 residents via telephone within an hour about an emergency situation, such as an evacuation or search for a lost child.
Public Health and Safety Committee members were given a demonstration Monday of the Citywatch Automatic Notification System. The system, purchased using a $30,000 state grant, has a computer that can be programmed to dial phone numbers in specific neighborhoods and leave a message on answering machines.
“We can set it up to talk to a person or leave a message,” Police Lt. Brad Hollister said.
Police plan to educate residents about the system and draft a plan in January for how and when it should be used.
