The Mooney Suzuki
Electric Sweat
The Mooney Suzuki is one of the many bands taking part in the recent New York City garage rock resurrection extravaganza. On “Electric Sweat,” the surf-rock spines and spastic hand clapping are just as enticing as they’ve ever been, but it seems the band tries hard to pack as much swagger as possible onto one little two-dimensional album, sometimes forgetting the finesse that would keep it accessible and alluring.
Live, this band writhes around to keep up with the instruments’ urgent, thrashing, melodic attack, and it works. A medley of design-school students with an affinity for mod stylings and retro rock, they unzip just enough to thrash around with an oddly attractive combination of uptight intelligence and unbridled passion for their sonic art.
Although not a castaway, this album isn’t doing too much to distinguish itself from its Big Apple brethren.
