Rich Central’s Jimmie Miles, one of the top basketball players in the country, has been suspended for the entire season by the Illinois High School Association for participating in an organized practice with Homewood Christian’s team before transferring out of the school in mid-October.

According to IHSA bylaws, a player loses eligibility if he transfers after competing for or practicing with his former school in the same school year. Homewood Christian, which is not a member of the IHSA, began its practices in September, two months before member schools began practicing.

“He was out for basketball at Homewood Christian,” IHSA assistant executive director Anthony Holman said Wednesday. “That made him ineligible at another school.”

Miles’ father, also named Jimmie, said he would appeal the decision at the IHSA’s Board of Directors meeting Dec. 2 in Bloomington.

“I can understand penalizing him,” the elder Miles said. “But don’t take away the whole season from him.”

The 6-foot-2-inch Miles, who averaged 25 points a game for Homewood Christian last season, signed a national letter of intent with Valparaiso on Wednesday.
