Seeing snow on the roof and in the front yard of a home in Chicago is not the sort of vision one would expect–not when the mercury is tickling 50 degrees and the sun is shining. And not when there hasn’t been a serious accumulation of the white stuff for a good six months. And more important, not when the house, in this case a Victorian-styled structure, is the only one covered with snow on an entire street of homes.

Yet there it was the other day, on Plymouth Court just south of Roosevelt Road: a house and yard boasting a post-blizzard covering of snow normally reserved for January.

The reason? Special-effects wizards had been working with TV’s “ER” to cover the house–think of it as the home of the late Dr. Mark Greene (Anthony Edwards) and Dr. Elizabeth Corday (Alex Kingston)–with mountains of “snow.”

“They were here filming for later in the season,” said Rich Moskal, head of the Chicago Film Office. So besides shooting exteriors of the snowy house, TV crews were busy on the “L” and near the Chicago Hilton and Towers.

Mother Nature and crews were expected to remove much of the fake snow, so if you want to see the house in all its snow-bound glory, stay tuned to “ER”–or drive by in late January.
