Yeah, we’ve all dissed ’em. But a cabdriver who sped us to work one day last week had something to get off his chest: Chicago cabbies are misunderstood, he said.

“People get very upset because cabdrivers don’t say hello in the way the people think they should,” said the earnest driver, who didn’t want his name used. “But cabdrivers come from many different cultures, and every culture has a different way of saying hello. And people from some cultures have learned to say hello in a very loud fashion. But that doesn’t mean they’re yelling, so people shouldn’t get upset!”

The cabby said proudly that he was from Eritrea, a tiny African country where people apparently are taught to speak their mind (not a bad thing, that).
