Hersey kicker Kevin Mazur wasn’t too worried with time winding down in the Huskies’ Mid-Suburban East game Friday night at Prospect.

Mazur kicked a 27-yard field goal with no time remaining as Hersey upset No. 15 Prospect 17-14.

After Prospect quarterback Jared Dall scored on a 5-yard run with 1 minute 24 seconds left to tie the game 14-14, Hersey’s Nick Krams returned the ensuing kickoff to the Prospect 47-yard line. Seven plays later, Mazur ended the game.

“That was just a chip shot,” Mazur said. “It’s the best feeling in the world right now. I was just happy that it was tied so it would go to overtime if I missed.”

Mike Chernick was 17-of-23 passing for 138 yards with a TD pass and an interception to lead Hersey (4-3, 2-1). Chernick’s 2-yard touchdown run with 6:44 left gave Hersey a 14-7 lead.

Bryon Gattas’ 3-yard TD run in the first quarter put Prospect ahead 7-0. Hersey tied the game on Chernick’s 22-yard scoring pass to Joe Manglardi.

Dall was 8-of-16 passing for 129 yards with two interceptions for Prospect (5-2, 1-2).

“We had two turnovers inside the 20 that really cost us,” Prospect coach Brent Pearlman said. “Basically we didn’t execute. Things that shouldn’t be a problem for us to do were a problem tonight. These kids have to understand that there is a sense of urgency every week.”

1. Downers Grove South

Another game, another goose egg for the Downers Grove South defense.

The top-ranked Mustangs (7-0) earned their fifth consecutive shutout as they held host Downers Grove North to just 57 net yards in a 20-0 win.

The defending Class 8A champs, who have given up only nine points this season, allowed Downers North (4-3) past midfield only once.

“We played tremendous defense,” Mustangs coach John Belskis said. “We took away what they were doing to other teams–running their quarterback [Tom Edwards].”

Downers South running back Erick Newman and kicker Kris Coffee provided much of the offensive punch. Newman rushed for 153 yards on 27 carries and scored on a 57-yard run in the second quarter. Coffee kicked field goals of 24 and 40 yards.

Running back Tony Fuller opened the scoring late in the first quarter with a 5-yard run.

At one point, Wunderlich, who finished with 232 yards on 15-of-21 attempts, completed eight consecutive passes, including touchdowns of 30 and 4 yards. His 30-yard touchdown pass went to Mike Costantino (11 carries, 138 yards), who also busted loose for a 91-yard scoring run to tie the game 7-7 after Central (3-4, 3-2) capitalized on the Wunderlich interception during the opening possession.

Wunderlich’s favorite target, tight end Peter Basso, caught six passes for 134 yards and a TD in the first half, and finished with 144 yards. Corey McKeon, who had two of North’s three interceptions in the first half, also rushed for two scores of 4 and 3 yards. His 4-yard TD gave the Huskies (6-1, 4-1) a 28-14 advantage at halftime.
