Charles P. Stokes Sr., 64, died Monday at Bon Secours Hospital after a heart attack, family members said.
Warren A. Brown, attorney for the younger Stokes, said Circuit Judge Allen L. Schwait granted eight hours of release from the house arrest imposed pending trial in the shooting of the Rev. Maurice J. Blackwell in May.
Stokes, 27, said he shot the 56-year-old priest because the clergyman would not apologize for sexually assaulting him when he was a teen-ager.
Brown said he and Assistant State’s Attorney Sylvester Cox met for about 20 minutes in Schwait’s chambers, before Stokes arrived for a hearing.
“I requested that he be given leave to attend the funeral,” Brown said. “The prosecution agreed to that.”
After his leave, Stokes must return to the Randallstown home of his aunt and uncle, Brown said.
Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Bernardine’s Roman Catholic Church, 3812 Edmondson Ave.
The elder Stokes, a retired statistical analyst for the postal service, had 12 children, 47 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, the family said.
