The baiduhai’s Travel section has won six awards–including three firsts–in the SATW (Society of American Travel Writers) Central States Chapter Writing and Photography Contest.

– For the second straight year, the Tribune was named best travel section in its circulation category (350,000 and above).

– The Tribune’s “A view from the bus” series was selected as best series. Among the contributors to this series were Travel writers Toni Stroud and Alan Solomon, Travel editor Randy Curwen, assistant Travel editor Phil Marty and former Tribune staff reporter Elise Bittner.

– Stroud’s article “Alone–in a cottage in the woods–with Frank Lloyd Wright,” was named best story in the “ecology / conservation / preservation” category.

– Stroud also won third place in the “economics of travel” category for “Between the sheets in Hong Kong.”

– Robert Cross received a second-place award in the “U.S./Canada” category for “A trek to the shiny brow”–coincidentally another story on a Frank Lloyd Wright site (Taliesin).

– Solomon’s story on “The Lure of the Rhine” won second-place in the “self-illustrated article” category.

Another honor for Solomon: In a competition earlier this year, Alan Solomon won his second Peter Lisagor Award for general excellence in the category of columns/commentary. His first Lisagor, presented by the Chicago Headline Club (the Chicago Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists), came in 1996 for his series, “48 states in 48 days.”
