A Darien man became the first person snagged in a fledgling Internet child-sex sting operation run by the Darien Police Department.

Christopher A. Bergman, 30, of the 7200 block of Wirth Drive, was arrested Friday and charged with indecent solicitation of a child after a four-month investigation by two detectives who received special training in Internet child-sex investigations late last year, said Deputy Chief Ronald Campo.

One of the detectives, who was posing as a 15-year-old girl, began an online correspondence with Bergman in February, Campo said. They traded numerous e-mails before Bergman arranged a meeting to have sex with the fictitious girl, Campo said.

Police seized his computer. If convicted, Bergman would face 2 to 5 years in prison. Bergman, who has no prior criminal record, remained in the DuPage County Jail Monday in lieu of posting $500,000 bail.

Campo said detectives will pursue the Internet sting operation as time allows.

“With all the guys you do find, it would be irresponsible not to imagine what else is going on that you haven’t caught yet,” Campo said.
