Motorists who have failed to purchase city parking stickers in past years could face fines under an ordinance that received preliminary approval Monday from the City Council.
Aldermen meeting as a committee of the whole tentatively approved a $75 fine for motorists who have not purchased the $30 annual vehicle sticker. The sticker fee increases to $80 after the July 31 purchase deadline.
Currently, fines apply only to the current year, officials said.
If the measure passes on second reading next month, as expected, the Finance Department would compile a database of sticker purchasers, officials said. Eventually, police could ticket scofflaws for $75 a year going back three years. Enforcement would be phased in over the next three years.
City officials said stickers bring in about $1 million a year.
