John Mooney
All I Want (Blind Pig)
More Top Picks Sun Shades
Had New Orleans guitarist John Mooney made this record in the late ’60s, he might have been a fresh blues-revival star, someone who adds fresh spirit to the old songs of the Mississippi Delta. Mooney is really good at it — strumming his electric guitar, channeling Mississippi Fred McDowell’s foot-stomping on the standard “You Got to Move,” Professor Longhair’s second-line boogie-woogie on “Hey Little Girl” and the great Chicago electric bands on his own “All I Want.” But this is 2002, and Mahal, Hammond, McDowell and Longhair — and countless other artists — have rambled down this road before. Even the blues needs new ideas sometimes.
