Elgin plans to hire a search firm to help replace the city manager who was fired in February.
The City Council interviewed three firms Monday. The city has hired search firms in the past.
“We want to hire the very best manager available whom we can get,” said Mayor Ed Schock. “If you just put in an ad, you’re limited to what comes in the door.”

Schock said the city is looking for candidates with good listening and communication skills, extraordinary people skills, and the ability to work comfortably amid diversity.
“We’re looking for a good fit, someone who is as excited about Elgin as we are,” he said.
Schock hopes to have a new city manager in four to six months.
The former manager, Joyce Parker, was fired in February while on sick leave with an eye ailment. The council called the firing performance-related.
