No lead was safe when No. 8 Lockport and No. 9 Morris met in the Class AA sectional softball semifinal at Morris on Thursday.

As a result, Lockport (28-9) got the benefit of batting last and scored the winning runs in the seventh to tip Morris 10-9.

Lockport, which beat Morris 4-3 in eight innings in April, will face SICA West opponent Lincoln-Way East in the final at 10 a.m. Saturday.

In the top of the first, Sarah Sempert doubled in two runs for Morris (31-7). In the bottom half, Samantha Finley slammed a three-run home run to left field.

Lockport added two runs in the second, and Morris cut it to 5-4 with two runs in the third. Morris went ahead 6-5 in the fifth with two runs and added three in the sixth thanks to a Kate Gibbs RBI double and two Lockport errors.

In the bottom of the sixth, Lockport tallied three runs and trailed 9-8 going to its last at-bat. With two out and a runner at second, pinch-hitter Katie Dyer walked.

Denise Van Vossen followed with a single to tie the game as Dyer advanced to third. Nikki Rogers then hit a bouncer back to Morris pitcher Jenna Smart, who threw it over the first baseman’s head, enabling Dyer to score the game-winner.

“We’ve told the kids all year that games are won in the sixth and seventh innings,” Lockport coach Barb Burk said.
