Area rivers and trails are the focus of two Conservation Foundation events scheduled for the first weekend in June.
On June 1, the foundation’s DuPage River Coalition will stage its 12th Annual River Sweep, targeting the East and West branches of the DuPage River and Salt Creek. Volunteers are needed to collect debris from waterways and stream banks throughout the region.
On June 2, the Conservation Foundation Trails Project will co-sponsor a National Trails Day celebration at Danada Forest Preserve in Wheaton. Other sponsors are the Elmhurst Bicycle Club, Trail Riders of DuPage and the DuPage County Forest Preserve District.
The free event will include several trail rides for bicyclists, including a 10-mile family ride that begins at 10 a.m. An 8-mile equestrian ride begins at 10:30 a.m. Advance registration is required for the rides. To register, call 630-415-BIKE or go to www.elmhurstbicycling.org.
A variety of activities are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., including brief trail etiquette and safety presentations by Forest Preserve District law enforcement officers and trails-related exhibits by local businesses and organizations.
