By the time University High’s Becky Levine won the 3,200-meter run in a downpour Saturday at the Lisle Class A sectional, the water flooding onto the track’s first lane was more than a half-inch deep.

It didn’t seem to bother Levine too much. She won in 11 minutes 59.93 seconds and Timothy Christian’s Rachel Reed followed in 12:23.06. Both advanced to the state meet next weekend in Charleston.

But the deep puddles on the track posed a safety concern for the sprinters, especially the hurdlers.

Around 1 p.m., with nine of 19 events completed, officials postponed the meet to 4:30 p.m. Monday after conferring by phone with Jim Flynn, an assistant executive director with the Illinois High School Association.

Lisle was the only area track sectional from Class A or AA scheduled for Saturday. The rest of the meets were completed Friday. Lisle’s stadium doesn’t have lights, forcing boys and girls track coach Ken Jakalski to schedule sectional meets on Saturday each year.

“This never has happened in my 17 years,” Jakalski said of the postponement.

The sloppy conditions didn’t hinder Jakalski’s shot-putters. Lisle junior Tammy Burris won at 39 feet 2 inches and sophomore teammate Whitney McMurray finished second at 35-3.

Burris and McMurray helped Lisle score 52 points through the nine events. Montini is in second place with 49 and defending Class A state champion Timothy Christian had 46.

Timothy Christian has struggled without sprinter Tefesah Storey, who missed the season with a leg injury. To make matters worse Reed, fourth in the 3,200 in last year’s state final, has been slowed by tendinitis in her right ankle.

“It’s been a rough year for us,” Timothy Christian coach Kevin Hackert said. “We won’t win state this year.”
