Aldermen said they support rezoning 6.7 acres at 1100 Northwest Highway from general manufacturing to central-core residential use.

The site is home to Nugent-Wenckus Inc., a graphic-arts business. John Thomas, president of Niles-based Newport Builders Inc., wants to build four seven-story condominium buildings on the site.

Some aldermen said during the committee of the whole meeting that they opposed changing the land’s zoning before details were made public. But city officials said that the Newport Builders’ plan would still be subject to City Council approval.

Aldermen also shelved a measure that would have required builders of multifamily residential projects to provide two parking spaces per unit instead of 1.5 spaces per unit. The proposal was suggested to ease street congestion.

Mayor Tony Arredia urged developers and condominium residents to meet with city officials within the next few weeks to devise a plan to ease the parking crunch.

If passed, the parking measure would cut the amount of land available for landscaping parking areas, said developer Ray Franczak of Mt. Prospect-based R. Franczak and Associates.
