June will be a big month for Sean Dockery.
The first-team All-State basketball player and McDonald’s All-American will attend prom, graduate from Julian and head to Duke on June 24 to take summer-school classes and begin off-season training.
Dockery can look forward to all of that now that he has qualified academically for a scholarship that Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski offered him last year. Dockery recently learned he met the ACT minimum score of 17 he needed to complement his grade-point average and is eligible to play in the fall.
“It feels like I got a lot off my shoulders,” he said. “I feel now like I’ve been successful in my high school career.”
The 6-foot-3-inch guard averaged 28 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and six steals a game as he led Julian to the Public League semifinals.
He had fallen short of a required score on the ACT last spring. Then last summer he took classes to boost his academic performance. Whispers about his eligibility for college basketball had followed him through his senior season.
“I heard the rumors,” he said. “If I had a bad game, people would throw in the ACT score.
“A lot of people said I couldn’t do it. I proved them wrong.”
