France has long been both crossroads and cauldron for world musicians. Here musicians from the former French colonies confront and cook up dark, saucy rhythms, Arab and African, kora and conga. Long a loose tribal group, Lo’Jo is a rock band whose guitars wail but who can also evoke the piercing melancholia of Berber desert songs. Lead singer Denis Paen has a gritty, world-weary voice that works like a charm in the foreground of all the funk, complemented by Nigerian sisters Yamina and Nadia Nid El Moumid. It’s all wonderful.
