Homeowners in search of wood chips for landscaping projects can get them free Saturday and Sunday at the DuPage County Forest Preserve District’s Native Plant Nursery.

Area residents are invited to help themselves to wood chips from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the West Chicago nursery, 29W218 Mack Rd., about one-half mile east of Illinois Highway 59.

Participants must load the chips themselves; a tractor will be available for loading pickup trucks.

The facility offers free chips whenever it has a mulch surplus, a spokeswoman said. For information, call 630-876-5920.

The Native Plant Nursery also will offer Parent-A-Tree kits for $5. Each kit contains two red or bur oak seedlings.

Participants are asked to return one tree three years later for transplanting into a DuPage County forest preserve.
