The Village Board voted to buy a house on a downtown block being considered as the site for a “town center” that would include a combination village hall and police station.

Village officials, however, said the purchase was not made with the town center in mind, but as part of the ongoing effort to rejuvenate the Illinois Highway 31 corridor, village President Mark Ruby said.
If the village owns the land, it can determine how it is developed, Ruby said.
It is on a block that in recent weeks was designated as a potential town center for the village’s historic downtown. Officials estimate it would cost $12 million to build the combined village hall and police station.
The house, at 17 N. Lincoln Way, as Illinois Highway 31 is called locally, belonged to an elderly couple who are moving into a nursing home, Ruby said.
