The Detroit Shock selected DePaul’s Lenae Williams with the 18th pick overall Friday in the 2002 WNBA draft, the second choice of the second round.
Williams, an All-State player at Addison Trail High School, earned Conference USA Player of the Year honors last season for the Blue Demons.
“It really didn’t matter to me what round I was picked,” said Williams, who averaged in double figures all four years at DePaul and scored 22.5 points per game as a senior. “This is just a great accomplishment.
“I was shocked when I heard my name but I was also very excited. Now I’m glad it’s done and I can start again with basketball.”
Indiana’s Jill Chapman, picked 21st and Notre Dame’s Ericka Haney, selected late in the third round, will join Williams on the Shock.
Seattle picked Sue Bird with its No. 1 pick. Her Connecticut teammates Swin Cash (No. 2), Asjha Jones (No. 4) and Tamika Williams (No. 6) also went high, Oklahoma’s Stacey Dales-Schuman went No. 3 overall to Washington.
