Three local non-profit groups are collaborating on The Uplands, a $21 million affordable housing project in nearby Sun Prairie, said a spokesman for one of the groups.

Bill Perkins is the executive director of Wisconsin Partnership for Housing Development, which is developing the project. He said the subdivision will be on 39.5 acres near Highway 19 and Musket Ridge Drive. It will include 143 units of single-family houses, duplexes and townhouses for rent and for sale.

Perkins said an estimated $5.6 million will be spent on the 40 rental units, and $15.4 million will be spent on for-sale properties.

He said that at least half of the homes for sale will be affordable to households with incomes at or below Dane County’s median income of $47,023.

Glueck Architects has designed The Uplands with an emphasis on compact building and green space. Also, a bike path will run through the neighborhood. McGann Construction is the general contractor.

Perkins said he expects the rental units to be completed first, and available in January. Movin’ Out will provide housing counseling and down-payment assistance to qualified applicants looking to buy a home in The Uplands. First Weber Group Realtors will broker the sales. Wisconsin Management will be the property manager.

The Community Action Coalition for South Central Wisconsin will also provide housing counseling and will help to identify suitable residents for rental properties.
