Cesar Carrillo is the only pitcher on Mt. Carmel’s staff and one of the few in local high school baseball who is allowed to call his own pitches.
Monday, Carrillo used coach Brian Hurry’s trust in him to beat Loyola and the Ramblers’ Jake Toohey 7-2 in a showdown between Catholic League leaders and hard-throwing senior right-handers who lured 10 major-league scouts to the game.

Carrillo’s game plan for his five-hit, two-walk, 13-strikeout complete-game victory was as simple as it was sound.
“I tried to get ahead of hitters by throwing strikes,” said Carrillo, “and get them out by throwing balls.”
This formula, plus Toohey’s wildness in Mt. Carmel’s five-run second inning, was enough to improve the Caravan to 12-3 overall and 4-0 in the league.
Mixing up 90 m.p.h. fastballs with knee-buckling curves, Carrillo fired first-pitch strikes to 22 of the 30 batters he faced.
“If I get ahead in the count the hitters really don’t have a chance, because then I come with the curve,” said Carrillo.
Aaron Kowal, Mt. Carmel’s designated hitter, drove home his third run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth after Loyola (10-3, 3-1) bunched three of its hits and scored its only runs in the top half of the inning.
