Lane Home Furnishings, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, wants to get the word out about an ongoing lock recall. The recall, which began in 1996, affects 12 million Lane and Virginia Made brand cedar chests. The lids on these models, made between 1912 and 1987, automatically lock when closed.
The cedar chests were made by Lane, based in Tupelo, Miss., as airtight pieces of furniture. Twelve children’s deaths have been linked to unsupervised play in the older cedar chests.
Lane is offering free replacement locks, or a decorative plate with no locking mechanism. The locks, used on models built since 1987, can be locked only from outside the chest.
